Gardening is one of my favourite stress relieving activities. The combo of spending time outside while also doing something productive is particularly appealing to me. I prefer vegetable gardening over other forms of gardening because I get to eat the fruits of my labour 😋 (pun totally intended!!). On the other hand, flowers, shrubs and plants result in a beautifully landscaped yard. The last couple of years I planted a small flower garden at the edge of my patio and I really enjoy just sitting and admiring the blooms.

Gardening, particularly weeding, can sometimes feel more like a chore than a stress busting activity, but I've found the following mindset shifts to be helpful:

  • Take your time, do it when you're not rushed

  • Remind yourself that this isn't just an item on your to-do list, but rather a relaxing activity that you enjoy

  • Listen to the birds chirping, or other sounds going on in the neighbourhood

  • Notice the warmth of the sun on your back or the smell of damp earth

  • Appreciate the tenacity of the weeds and how they seem to thrive under any condition 😣

  • Try to avoid the tendency to let your mind slip into rumination. And when it does, just notice that and come back to the present moment

And even if you live in an apartment, you can still reap the benefits of gardening. Try growing some herbs or put a few flower pots on your front step or balcony.
